We are partners in business and in life. We started out as BlueBird Cupcakes in 2010. I had just graduated from NC State and couldn't find a job. On a whim, I decided to call the NC State Fair to see if I could sell cupcakes there. We ended up getting a spot that year, and it was magical. It was incredibly busy, super fun and so rewarding. We've sold cupcakes at the fair every year since. Over time, we started making party cakes and wedding cakes as well as cupcakes.
Fast forward to 2015 when we met Amy Sliffe of Blue Whistler Farm—Amy had been wanting to have pastries and coffee available at her open farm markets and we had been looking for ways to expand the pastry business—it was an easy decision for us to start selling pastries at Blue Whistler.
We started making connections with farmers in the area to get local ingredients from and we started making more rustic pastries that showcased seasonal produce. We also started participating in other farmers markets and community events throughout Raleigh and Durham. Now, we offer a wide variety of artisanal pastries and breads—we've come a long way from our first year of cupcakes.
On a typical farm market day at Blue Whistler, you can get locally and sustainably raised meat, eggs and honey, locally produced milk and yogurt, locally grown vegetables and herbs, locally made soap and lotion, locally produced cheese, locally brewed beer, locally roasted coffee and locally baked bread and pastries. We're so proud to be part of this little community we've helped build.
